Great Lakes Theme Semester Branding
University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
The Great Lakes Theme Semester is a series of courses, films, panels and field trips on campus that examine and explore how the Great Lakes have shaped the midwest region and beyond. The semester focuses on the environmental, historical, political and social issues of the Great Lakes. The branding for this theme semester portrays the effects of the Great Lakes by showing a ripple in the text itself that moves onward. The main image of Michigan with the surrounding lakes shows how the lakes are layered in depth, history and change with time. For this piece I used imagery of the great lakes region, Michigan city maps, along with historical drawings of the ports on the Great Lakes. All of these pieces work together to show the constant shift that happens in this region. Another aspect of the design is to only show a portion of the lakes at a time. This leads the viewer to question what they are looking at and investigate. Materials designed include posters, flyers, street banners, web graphics and social media animations.
